Lameness
& Performance Program
21 CE
Total Hours
September 23rd - 25th, 2010
Groton, Connecticut
Welcome to the NEAEP’s 2010 Lameness and Performance
Program. Nationally and internationally known leaders in the field of equine
sports medicine, surgery, orthopedic research and imaging will be presenting
current findings on a variety of topics from the latest in intra-articular
and intralesional therapies to maximizing diagnostic capabilities and
imaging choices. A large portion of the program will focus on clinical case-based discussion, with interaction between the presenters and audience.
Panel discussions will also be held to encourage dialogue between the
presenters and the attendees.
The goal of these lectures is to present the most current and
practical clinical information to the practitioner, enhancing their ability
to diagnose equine lameness and performance problems and select the most
appropriate treatment or management decision.

Speakers & Topics
Sue Dyson, MA, Vet MB,
PhD, DEO, FRCVS
-
Mike
W. Ross, DVM, Dip. ACVS

Sue Dyson
and Mike Ross will present a series of clinical cases, some
straightforward, some more complicated, which aim to show the
importance of clinical examination and the use of diagnostic
analgesia. We will demonstrate how the results of diagnostic
analgesia are sometimes confusing. We will show some horses in
which diagnosis is readily achieved using radiography and ultrasonography, but others in which scintigraphy, magnetic
resonance imaging or computed tomography are required for
accurate diagnosis. However some of the potential pitfalls of
advanced imaging will also be highlighted. Horses will be
selected from a variety of disciplines to demonstrate the
similarities and differences of clinical presentations of some
conditions. This is designed to be interactive, with ample
opportunity for audience participation and exchange of ideas and
experiences between Sue and Mike. There will be no set
program, in order to allow the sessions to develop to suit the
needs of the audience.
Philippe
Benoit, DVM, MS
Sponsored By:

Clinical Exam of the Back
This presentation will highlight the way the back can be
examined by the practitioner including tips to differentiate different areas
of pain on the thoracolumbar region and pelvis. Some imaging techniques
will be also illustrating this topic.
Medical Management of Back Pain
After presenting the different areas of pain, various
techniques of treatment will be described including mesotherapy, deep
injections and ultrasound-guided techniques.
The Use of Tildren in Equine Practice (a 6 years
experience/over 1000 doses used)
The only
biphosphonate treatment licensed for horses in Europe “TILDREN” has been
used on a significant amount of clinical cases in our practice. A review of
the results and way of managing this treatment on various type of
indications will be discussed.

Alicia
L. Bertone DVM, PhD, Dip. ACVS
Autologous Biotherapies
Dr. Bertone will be discussing the latest
research and clinical applications on autologous biologic therapies such as
PRP and IRAP for the management of tendon, ligament and articular
conditions.
Joint
Steroid Use in Horses –
Effectiveness and Drug Detection –
New Information
Regenerative Cell Therapy in Horses - Where are we?
Dr. Bertone will be
discussing the latest research and clinical applications regarding
regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy, including cell therapy, cell
therapy and PRP, bone marrow and BMP engineered cells that are being used to
manage equine musculoskeletal disease.

Sarah
Puchalski, DVM, BS, Dip. ACVR
Kate
Chope, VMD

Sponsors:
Dr. Puchalski will be discussing the practical
and advanced use of the different imaging modalities available for equine
practitioners, including digital radiography, nuclear medicine, computed
tomography (CT) and contrast enhanced CT, MRI of the foot, fetlock, proximal
metatarsus and tarsus. A goal of these talks will be to increase the practitioners’ ability to use plain radiographs with a review of the
radiographic examination and evaluation of other modalities as examples.
Dr. Puchalski’s talks will be given in conjuction with Dr. Kate Chope, who
will present the ultrasound imaging portion of each region.
Dr. Chope will be
presenting the ultrasound portion of Dr. Puchalski’s lectures on multi-modal
diagnostic imaging of the foot, fetlock , metatarsus and tarsus. Discussion
will include what information can be obtained with ultrasound in these
regions and image maximization in this region.
